Students who started college in the fall of 2024 represent the first incoming class that spent all four years of secondary education in a pandemic-shaped world. Referred to in this report as “the COVID cohort,” they have been shaped by unprecedented challenges, disruptions, and changes brought on by the global pandemic.
These students present a distinct set of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors with respect to their mental health, intentions to engage with campus support, and perceptions of their community that differ significantly from prior incoming classes over the past several years.
This report, drawing on pre-matriculation survey data and insights from academic literature, identifies key trends and themes of the COVID cohort as they entered college, which college administrators should consider in supporting this generation effectively.
