Bullying prevention in schools requires a commitment from everyone and a school-wide approach. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for adolescents, and the most dramatic rise in suicide rates was found for middle school-age girls.
Schools have been reluctant to take a leadership role in suicide prevention as many school administrators lack the appropriate training, are uncomfortable with the topic, and believe the myth that if we talk about suicide, we might plant an idea in the mind of a student. Nothing could be further from the truth, and talking with suicidal students actually gives them the opportunity to unburden themselves, know they are not alone, and can get them the help that they need.
