How Vector Solutions and Stelray Plastic Products Molded the Ultimate Employee Training & Career Pathing Program

The Customer
With decades of experience in the plastics industry, Stelray Plastic Products, Inc. is a leader in precision injection molding and mold building for industries such as medical, aerospace, consumer appliance, and many others. The company maintains a 35,000 square foot facility with 45 highly-skilled employees who are committed to producing quality products built to extremely precise requirements. This commitment is not only evident in their work, but also their certification as a registered ISO 9001:2015 company as well as their compliance with 21 CFR 820 for Good Manufacturing Practices.
The Challenge
As a company dedicated to the production of precision molded components, proper training was essential for both new employees as well as employees seeking career advancement. Although current training materials were available, it was difficult for managers to manually deliver and track training since there was an absence of a centralized location to store training materials and completion records. Managers would also have customized training materials for specific procedures but developing the training materials, distributing them, then manually grading them took time away from a manager’s daily tasks. Knowing whether or not an employee was properly trained was a priority that the company knew was taking too much time.
Key Challenges:
- Limited recordkeeping capabilities
- Lack of a centralized location for all training materials
- Developing training plans for onboarding and promoting employees
- Creating customized quizzes and tests
- Outdated training content
“A few of our positions have very specialized skill sets with opportunity for staff to be promoted from within the organization – understanding training is a priority.”
Ann Canfield
Training Manager
The Solution
Stelray Plastic Products partnered with Vector Solutions to acquire our learning management system (LMS) and good manufacturing practice (GMP) eLearning courses to administer training and the benefits were almost instantaneous. In a short period of time, the company was able to generate a centralized location for all training by importing their current training materials into the LMS while digitizing additional materials to create quizzes, surveys, and other in-house content.
Key Benefits:
- Real-time reports & instant access to employee training records
- Create training programs to qualify employees for a new skill
- Create quizzes and training content
- Import previously created training content (i.e. documents, videos, etc.)
- User-friendly system
- Up-to-date eLearning content
Another benefit for administrators was the ability to easily assign these materials, as well as the updated GMP courses from Vector Solutions, to the groups of employees who needed it. Once training was assigned to an employee, the LMS automatically alerted employees of the assigned training and allowed them to begin their training so managers could focus on reinforcing training on the job versus the initial administration of the training.
But the most valuable highlight the company noted was the LMS’ matrix reporting feature. With a few clicks, administrators were now able to view the completion records of employees to see who were up-to-date on their training and who were not, in real time.
Vector Solutions has assisted in managing the required internal and external training for our trainees to be successful in their new role. [They have] a very user-friendly platform allowing us to easily create in-house training aids, import files and create quizzes. In addition, the audit friendly matrix reporting in real time is a time saver.
The Outcome
Both employees and administrators have seen the benefits of the system. According to Canfield, “this LMS has become a game changer for us to train and test our staff at every level of our organization. [This] program has significantly contributed to our training, specifically for injecting molding, since there is limited ‘off the shelf’ training for various procedures in our company.”
