District Saved Over $787,000 in One Year
Horry County Schools was seeking a training solution to help reduce work-related injuries and workers’ compensation claims.
The Challenge
Horry County Schools is the third largest district in South Carolina. The district serves more than 38,000 students in 50 schools and 6 support work sites with 5,866 employees (650 of which are Subs).
Like many districts nationwide, Horry County is fully committed to providing a safe learning environment for students and a safe workplace for staff.
The district reviewed their work-related injuries and found they had:
- A high number of injuries
- Many same type injuries
- Many serious, life-changing injuries
- Mod Rate and WC premiums that were too high
With a tight fiscal budget, the district knew it was time for a significant change!

The Solution
After conducting a thorough needs assessment, district administrators discovered that one major area that needed improvement was training. Training over 5,800 staff members in 56 different locations, on multiple topics can be quite a challenge. Most Horry County trainings were conducted as live meetings, but these were no longer efficient or cost effective. And, tight travel budgets and personnel cuts made it even more challenging to meet the district\’s training requirements.
After reviewing a number of staff training programs, the district selected the Vector Training (formerly SafeSchools) Online Training System because the program includes 100% school-focused courses that are relevant to real-life scenarios that educators face everyday. Vector Training also includes a compliance management system, and when used together, the system completely automates the training and tracking process for an entire district.
Horry County now trains all staff members with Vector Training so they’re able to train more staff, in less time, for less money.
Now that employees are better trained, there are fewer serious injuries and the district saved $787,000 in Workers’ Comp claims this year alone! According to Connie, “These results are directly tied to our use of Vector Training!”
The District’s Training Plan
Using Vector Training, Horry County can log on to their custom system and assign courses to different workgroups all with a few simple clicks. The system then automatically notifies individual employees of their assignments and due dates via email. Staff can complete the interactive courses online, 24/7, from any device with an Internet connection. Horry County employees like the flexibility of being able to train at school or at home, when it’s convenient with their schedules.
The Administrative Reports in Vector Training allows Connie to run a variety of compliance reports, detailing the staff members who have and have not completed their assignments. Reports can be filtered by any combination of position, building and course and easily shared with other Administrative staff in the district.
Outstanding Results – $787,000 Savings
Horry County now trains all staff members with Vector Training so they’re able to train more staff, in less time, for less money. The district assigns courses on July 1st, and when school started this year, Horry County employees had already completed more than 55,000 Vector Training courses in less than 90 days! Now that employees are better trained, there are fewer serious injuries and the district saved $787,000 in Workers’ Comp claims this year alone! According to Connie, “These results are directly tied to our use of Vector Training!” Terrific job, Horry County! Keep up the great work!
