Top Tips for School Bus Safety

Teaching safety in and around the school bus is extremely important. Read on for top safety tips for drivers, students, and the community! 

 

For Drivers: 

  1. Minimize crossovers. Most school bus tragedies occur when students must cross the street. Know which students cross the street and check that they have safely done so before pulling away. If you can, re-route the bus to avoid crossovers.  
  2. Ensure the students always follow safe crossing procedures. Do not allow students to run across the street, and make sure they follow your instructions.  
  3. School buses should have a crossing arm on the front of the bus to always keep the students away from the front and in your sight.  
  4. Correct unsafe actions immediately. If a student does not act safely, correct them right away each time.  
  5. Count the kids as they exit and count them again just before you pull away, so you know where they are. 
  6. Complete comprehensive training on reducing the danger zones risks. 

 

For Students: 

  1. Be at the stop 5 minutes before pick up. 
  2. Never run after the bus. If you do, you will not be allowed to board. 
  3. Wait at least 5 giant steps away from the edge of the road. 
  4. If you must cross the street, wait until the bus has arrived and follow the driver’s directions to cross. 
  5. Never go close to the front of the bus. If you do, the driver cannot see you. 
  6. Never pick up anything you drop, tell the driver, and ask for their help in retrieving any item that is dropped. 
  7. Never play, push, or fight near a school bus. 
  8. Remove drawcords from clothing or backpacks. 

 

For the Community: 

  1. Never pass a school bus when its stop lights are flashing. 
  2. Be extra vigilant around school hours – assume a child might run out at any moment.  
  3. Be courteous to school buses, give them room and let them change lanes when they need to.
