Nov. 8-14 is Crash Responder Safety Week: Safeguarding First Responders at Traffic Accidents

Crash Responder Safety Week (CRSW) is November 8-14, 2021. This initiative, begun by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, aims to raise awareness around the dangers firefighters, medics, police officers, and all first responders face while on the scene of a traffic accident.

According to motor vehicle crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019, there were 6,765,000 police-reported motor vehicle traffic accidents in the U.S. And while every state has Move Over laws, which require drivers to provide safe clearance to first responders working roadside, far too many emergency responders are injured or killed while performing their duties. The International Association of Fire Fighters reports that a first responder is killed nearly every week while responding to a traffic accident, and many more sustain life-changing injuries.

CRSW provides an important opportunity to reinforce roadway safety practices during a traffic accident for the public and first responders. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, slow down, and move over when approaching a traffic accident. First responders are encouraged to stay updated on best practices for staying safe while on the scene.

Training is an essential component to ensuring safety and readiness for first responders. The Vector LMS training management system is designed to help public safety agencies meet training and compliance requirements as well as streamline policy and procedure distribution and resource sharing.
